Translation is an integral part of life in multilingual societies. The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has been enjoying exponential growth, which has opened up a dazzling array of new possibilities. Anyone working in the media should be aware of how the process of translation is being transformed and what this means for business.

New technology is creating both solutions and challenges for translators. Increasingly, people expect seamless instantaneous communication in a language and platform chosen by them. The latest developments have potential consequences for all of us. Producers and translators of audiovisual material, broadcasters, software developers, media houses, translation companies and language practitioners must strive to be at the forefront of innovation, defining best-practice for the 21st century. The proliferation of social media, the growth of online communities and the greater access to ICT enjoyed by an increasing proportion of the world’s population, call for a re-assessment of the relationship between media producers, distributors, consumers and translators.

The global economic recession is having a severe impact on industry, whilst shifting demographics are creating more diversified societies within which questions of identity, language rights, access to information, and equality are of great importance. New systems that improve access to people with sensory impairments are multiplying, lesser-used languages are now being nurtured to promote or maintain language diversity and localisation of content is an ever-present need in the search for greater personalisation amidst the trend toward globalisation. Both communities and individual ‘stakeholders’ can address the challenges of multilingualism by promoting excellence in the practice of translation and by supporting language learning among viewers of all ages.

It is vital that researchers, language practitioners, including translators and interpreters, software developers and all those who produce, market, or distribute audiovisual materials for information, entertainment or educational purposes should discuss the implications of the change that is happening around us. The 9th Languages & The Media conference is the ideal place to identify current and future trends, to network and to learn about the many new opportunities offered by translation in multilingual communities in rapidly changing technological environments.
